How high should you mount a TV?
Put the centre of the screen at seated eye level, which Consumer Reports puts at about 42 inches from the floor for a standard couch. On a 55-inch TV that lands the bottom edge of the screen around 28 inches up.
The rule, and why it is eye level
Your eyes sit roughly 40 to 44 inches above the floor when you are on a sofa, so a screen centred in that band is the one you can watch for two hours without tipping your head back. Consumer Reports' mounting guide puts the practical number at 42 inches from the floor to the centre of the screen, which matches the eye level of someone about 5 foot 6 sitting on a standard couch.
Measure your own rather than trusting the average. Sit where you actually watch, have someone measure from the floor to the middle of your eyes, and work from that. A low lounge chair and an upright dining chair can differ by six inches.

Working out the height for your screen
A 16:9 screen is about 0.49 times its diagonal in height, so:
- Screen height = diagonal × 0.49
- Bottom edge = your eye height − (screen height ÷ 2)
Worked through for a 42-inch eye height:

The pattern is worth internalising: as screens get bigger, the mount goes lower, not higher. A 75-inch TV hung where a 43-inch one used to be will have you watching the ceiling.
Consumer Reports adds a sanity check for wall mounts: the bottom of the screen should be no higher than your eye level when seated, and the top no higher than eye level when standing.
Worked example: a 65-inch TV at 42-inch eye height
- Screen height: 65 × 0.49 = 32 inches
- Bottom edge: 42 − 16 = 26 inches from the floor
- Top edge: 42 + 16 = 58 inches
- Viewing distance at 1.2 to 1.6 × diagonal: 6.5 to 8.7 feet from the screen
Note what that rules out. A media console 30 inches tall already puts the bottom of the screen above the ideal line before anything is mounted, which is why the same TV looks better on a low unit than on a tall one.
The fireplace problem
Above a mantel, the centre of the screen usually lands between 55 and 65 inches, which is 15 to 20 inches above seated eye level. That is a neck angle you will feel after a film, and it is why the arrangement photographs better than it lives.
If the fireplace wall is the only option:
- Use a tilting or pull-down mount so the screen angles toward the seating.
- Move the seating back. The further away you sit, the smaller the upward angle becomes.
- Check clearance and heat. TV manufacturers publish a maximum ambient operating temperature, and the air directly above a working fireplace can exceed it.
How far back should the sofa be?
Mounting height and viewing distance are the same decision. For 4K sets, manufacturer guidance has moved closer than the old HD advice. LG and Samsung both put the sweet spot at roughly 1.2 to 1.6 times the screen diagonal. A 4K panel does not show its pixels at that range.

If your room cannot deliver the distance, the honest fix is a smaller screen rather than a higher mount. Measure wall to sofa with the room size calculator before you buy.
Check it before you drill
- Cut cardboard to the screen's outline, or mark the outline on the wall with painter's tape.
- Sit down. Not stand — sit exactly where you watch from.
- Leave the tape up for an evening. Height problems announce themselves after twenty minutes, not in the first glance.
- Only then find the studs and drill.
Do not forget the depth of the mount. A full-motion arm can hold the screen three to five inches off the wall when retracted, which changes both the reflection angles and how far the frame protrudes past a mantel.
