Shingle Calculator
Enter your roof footprint and pitch to calculate roofing squares and exactly how many shingle bundles to order, waste included.
Unit
Roof footprint (feet)
Measure the building at ground level, not along the slope — the pitch below converts it.
One roofing square covers 100 ft², and a standard asphalt bundle covers about 33.3 ft², so three bundles make a square. Check the coverage printed on your bundle before ordering — designer and premium laminate shingles sometimes cover less. Starter strip, ridge cap, underlayment and drip edge are ordered separately.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how many shingles I need?
Measure the roof footprint at ground level, multiply length by width for each roof plane, then multiply by the pitch factor to get the true sloped area. Divide that area by 100 to get roofing squares, add a waste buffer, and multiply the squares by three to get standard bundles.
How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Three. A roofing square covers 100 ft² and a standard asphalt bundle covers about 33.3 ft². Some heavyweight designer and laminate shingles cover less per bundle, so check the coverage printed on the wrapper before ordering.
How many bundles of shingles do I need for a 2,000 ft² roof?
A 2,000 ft² sloped roof is 20 squares, which is 60 bundles before waste. With a 15% waste buffer for a standard roof you would order about 69 bundles. Complex roofs with several hips and valleys push that closer to 72.
Does roof pitch change how many shingles I need?
Yes, and it is the step most estimates get wrong. A 6:12 pitch roof has about 12% more surface than its flat footprint, and a 12:12 pitch has 41% more. This calculator applies the pitch multiplier for you, so measure the building footprint rather than climbing on the roof.
How much waste should I add for shingles?
Roughly 10% for a simple gable roof with two clean planes, 15% for a standard roof, and 20% when there are multiple hips, valleys, dormers or skylights to cut around. Starter strip, ridge cap, underlayment and drip edge are ordered separately from the field shingles.
